Drama...

Today I bought a notebook that I designated to be just for my ideas. My mind has been spinning 24/7 with new concepts and ways to do things and usually I just throw them in the Blackberry or make a mental note. Lately, there are so many that the time is long overdue for me to have a place where they can all be in one spot. This morning I began to think about something that's been on my mind pretty heavy for the past week. Before I can explain, here's a little bit of the back story....

I'm about to attempt to make an extremely long story short and sweet...About 3 months ago I made a connect with someone in the music industry to have them attend a showcase that some friends were having. Somewhere in between business calls, the business relationship went out the window and the line became blurry causing the relationship to be more personal. Not personal in the sense that we were "together", but in a way that whenever he was having issues he could feel free to call for my advice. This completely went against my better judgment, but it all started with me answering one question then the next thing you know I was on call around the clock. Eventually I realized that the situation was no good and cut off ties with him because (a) since I have a psych degree all the advice I gave were billable hours, and (b) the drama that was being dealt with was way too much for me. In the process of me helping "Drama", he told me about a business idea that he had. Great idea, but the execution of it was terrible so I gave him a few pointers and even volunteered to help. Drama was too much of a hot shot to listen to little old me so his idea continues to be stagnant and I doubt that it'll ever work at this point if he keeps going in the same direction. Here's the dilemma that I have: I know how to make his idea be successful, but don't know if that would be wrong of me to execute it. I told him exactly what to do, but because of who he is he refuses to listen. So, I'm thinking why not take the concept and develop it myself....

I took the dilemma I had over to my twitter fam and here's what some of them had to say:

@franklanzkie Why dont u go to him & suggest partnering up?....u be the woman behind the man & quietly run sh*t. U think Bill ran the White House? Nope...Hillary...
@mzinspiredmind You know what, I say go for it.
@DUMUSIC if your more serious and have a better plan put in place go for it. Its not your fault he slacked
@goldigold a good idea become a bad idea if you don't use it

What to do? Develop the idea or just move on from it? Why?

My stance is still pretty much the same. I felt in some ways that it wasn't right b/c it was somebody else's idea in the first place. I have to agree w/ DUMusic though. That's his fact that he slacked off and someone else ran w/ the idea.

First off, it is great to see that you are back on the scene again.

Secondly, it is great that you are questioning whether or not this is something that you should do or not. While it could potentially be financially beneficial for you to proceed with the idea, you don't want to be in a situation where there is a legal battle down the road for "stealing his idea". If there is a way around that aspect, I say go for it! Why not monopolize on a good idea if someone else chooses not to.

There won't be a legal battle unless he wrote it down somewhere with exact date, method of execution, examples of a prototype, etc. I just wrote a paper on this. Lol. You can check the terms for the US Patents and Trademarks Office online. If you put your own twist on it, you can say it's yours. Good call on no longer talking to him btw. He was making you his mom and ish. BTW, lmao on the "billable hours." Shoot, in this economy, you SHOULD be getting paid for advice.

I had a business idea that I came up with on the spot in the middle of a convo. The guy I was speaking to told me to never talk about it to someone lest they steal it. Thankfully, starting a business is that last thing on my mind right now so I wasn't freaking out. But I got his point.
